Yvonne LaRose Becoming Part of the Community

Within the last four weeks, there have been three new people move into the place where I'm living. Last night I had an opportunity to have a conversation with the newest member of the house and get acquainted with him. He and the other new man in the house are contrasts in some ways. In reflecting on their similarities and differences, it seemed to me that they are quite representative of what we find in the workplace. So I dare to venture into this usually private realm in order to examine some… Continue

Yvonne LaRose Women and Facing Adversity

I'm a warrior-princess. It's a hard-earned title and not romantic at all. There are other types of warriors and other types of princesses. We've seen the spectrum of them in the business world. The Warrior The warrior is the one who is ready and able to go into battle on her own at any time. She relishes a good fight for the sake of the sport and the challenge. It forces her to use her skill and knowledge to the utmost in order to survive. It makes her come up with new ways to attack th… Continue

Yvonne LaRose Making Progress

Slowly but surely, I'm beginning to remove the many obstacles that have interferred with my being productive over the past several months. It's interesting to analyze those situations in hindsight and make a determination of whether most of them originated from the same place and if so, what to do about maintaining a relationship there. Also interesting is analyzing the diversity of the interferences, their pattern and goal. The now pending question is whether these situations could have been fo… Continue

Yvonne LaRose Youthful Indiscretion Permitted

A friend and I were observing the newest crop of freshmen and considering the things they do. We then considered how their new lives translate onto social networking sites such as MySpace, FaceBook, Hi5, and others.

Paraphrasing, my friend complained, "It's just a bunch of photographs of people holding cups of red beer, doing insane things, standing in outrageous positions, making faces, and just being really stupid." There was a longer litany of foolish and outlandish representations…

Gregory David Moring Am I qualified?

This entry bucks the trend of incoherence that has so far defined my essays in this space. Today, I have a specific opportunity in front of me, and I don't know how to approach it.

Here's the text highlighting the opening, which is for a full-time Arts & Entertainment Reporter at the Downtown News:

We are looking for a reporter capable of covering the arts and entertainment scene of the evolving Downtown community, including theater, music, museums and art galleries.… Continue

Gregory David Moring Nothing is too wonderful to be true...

I wish I was the first to put together the preceding sentence; alas, David Yazbek beat me to the sucka punch-a. If I were one-tenth as good a writer as this guy is, I'd have no trouble describing this moment: I'm sitting in my new tenth-floor apartment in Park La Brea, listening to music on my computer as city lights shine from the Hollywood Hills. Were it not for the towers directly in front of my window, the view would be a postcard perfect picture, and I could be excused for believing that LA… Continue

Yvonne LaRose Waiting and Wasting

One of the things I most dislike is wasting time. Needlessly and mindlessly doing things repeatively for the sake of doing something instead of meaningful engagement in a purposeful activity that has a substantive reward for completion drives me up a wall.

While we're on the subject of things that make me grind my teeth, disrespect is right up there in the Top Ten as well. But that's another blog post.

I've spent most of this morning trying to get a good Inter…

Gregory David Moring Back in the saddle...

A little background info: My primary strength is in writing (short stories, plays, poems, essays, etc.), and down the road I'm hoping to write for film and television. I've had a couple of internships in the entertainment industry, and did a couple of volunteer stints on different video projects. But none of these experiences made me jump up and scream, "Yowza! THIS is what I gotta do!" So, it's hard for me to say what I'm looking for.

I started to write this in an email this m… Continue

Yvonne LaRose Old Friends Come Home

I'm preparing for a webinar on Thursday and need to send some information to one of the panelists. In the endeavor to collect two links, I'm stumbling around several websites.

What a surprise to learn that what i thought was a new site to me is actually one I've visited and browsed before. In fact, I'm still logged in! It seems when I registered to be part of BizJournals.com, I also became registered with their sister sites. That's why I'm stil…

Gregory David Moring Waiting for something to change...

For years, I've been waiting for something to fall out of the sky, bop me on the head, and change my life for the better. But lately I've been waking up to the reality that it's just not going to happen. No amount of talent, no generous parent, will walk me through that door and give me wing. And nobody will come to me with the answer that only I can provide: what do I want to do with the finite number of days I have left on this planet?

I graduated from USC in May, which now leaves m… Continue

Yvonne LaRose Talk About a Meme!

One of my new friends (Colleen, who is a poet) from Book Place has tagged me. It started with a friend of hers who started a meme. (You need to click on the link to find out what the word means, but there are a few hints and tips as you work through this.) And now the race is on to keep the co…

Yvonne LaRose Responsibility and Discipline

The current brouhaha that's consuming the news airwaves is the matter of Paris Hilton's submitting herself to the laws of the land and the orders of the court. Unfortunately, what she is showing all of us is that she has never in her life been disciplined nor learned to take responsibility for any of her actions. She has never learned how to pay the price for a mistake because she can always buy her way out of the situation or crybaby her way to forgiveness. She's led a pampered life. She's n…

Gregory David Moring You know those days when nothing happens the way you want?

I know 'em. I had a day like that today. It started with a restless night, in which I woke up repeatedly in the middle of the night for no apparent reason. It wasn't even from hunger pangs or a slightly sour stomach, as is usually the case (I know, this is a networking site, not a medical history, but bear with me). I simply found myself wide awake, though heavy-eyed, my body uncomfortably tense. Because of this, I missed my alarm this morning and woke up at 10:30. Already, this is a setback, be… Continue

Yvonne LaRose Validity of Dress Codes

Hampton University, a traditionally black university, recently hit the national news when it came down with an addition to requirements for its Bachelors / MBA candidates. It added a dress code that requires not wearing hair in a certain style typically considered black or African i
